What is Code Girls?

Code Girls is the first program of its kind in Wilmington, providing a series of fun and interactive workshops for girls in the world of information technology and computer science. Girls are the future leaders of science and technology, and by participating in Code Girls, students will gain confidence and skills in the fundamentals of computer building and coding with Python, web development, database management, and so much more. Students will experience real-world subject matter, and more importantly how to apply skills learned in their everyday life and future career paths. Code Girls will empower girls and minorities to be equal participants and future leaders in computer sciences and STEM learning. It promises to be a fun, inspiring, and rewarding experience for all!

FAQ:

Who can apply?
Code Girls is open to any girl 8 years or older, and we encourage any girl to apply regardless if they have specific interests in learning coding and new technology or whether they simply want to try something new and unique. We anticipate awarding 15 full scholarships to the program ranging from upper elementary to high school ages. For questions on eligibility please contact Dr. Rob at rob@youngscientistacademy.org.
HOW DO I APPLY?
Applicants should complete the online application before 5pm on Friday July 3, 2020. The application is straightforward and should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. Applicants will be required to complete their personal information (applicant and parent name, address, parent email etc.), and answer four general application questions that address their motivation for applying to Code Girls and the mission of YSA.  Reference letters are not required for the application, the Code Girls Search Committee will reach out to applicants for references if required.
What happens once I have submitted my application?
The Code Girls Search Committee will review all applications upon receipt and notify by email on their decision usually within 2-3 business days.
What is required of participants in the Code Girls program
During the 3-week summer program, students will work in teams of five other girls and be mentored by early career women in computer science and technology.  If new to the program, each participant will complete one week of beginner level instruction in computer coding and basic web design during the week of July 6. Following the introductory week, all groups will work together on an intermediate level coding research project in a 2-3 week ‘Hackathon’. Each group may choose their coding project from a list of public health and climate change themes. Each group will present their projects at the Code Girls Awards Ceremony on Friday July 31 from 6-8pm.
When do workshops run?
Summer workshops are all conducted online with morning and afternoon sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting the week of July 6. The schedule of events will be posted soon on this page.
Do I need to have my own computer?
Students do not need to purchase or own a computer to participate in Code Girls. YSA will provide full access to computers, printers, internet, software and other technology used in the program. Participants are welcome to use their own laptops if they desire but this is not a requirement.
How do I find out more about Code Girls?
A Code Girls information session will be held for applicants and their parents on Zoom on Thursday June 18 at 6pm. Applicants are not required to attend this information session, but are encouraged to attend as it is a great opportunity to ask specific questions about the program. To register for the webinar please contact Dr. Rob at rob@youngscientistacademy.org.
WHY is code girls not in person?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to provide in-person instruction for the Code Girls program this summer. Health and safety of our staff, students and their families, and our Harrelson Center partners are our priority, and it is important that everyone involved in YSA exhibits community citizenship. Our spring virtual program was very successful, and I would encourage all girls to get involved in this virtual interactive experience.
