What is required of participants in the Code Girls program
During the 3-week summer program, students will work in teams of five other girls and be mentored by early career women in computer science and technology. Each group will separately complete one week of beginner level instruction in computer coding and basic web design, either in the week of June 29, July 6 or 13 (applicants will provide availability for this instruction week when applying to program). Following the introductory week, all groups will work together on an intermediate level coding research project in a two week ‘Hackathon’ (July 20-31). Each group may choose their coding project from a list of web based, app, mapping, or other technology research projects (to be announced in May) or may come up with their own project ideas. Each group will present their projects at the Code Girls Awards Ceremony on Friday July 31 from 6-8pm (venue TBD).
When do workshops run?
Summer workshops run daily (Monday to Friday) from 9a-4p. Parents and legal guardians will be required to sign their children in and out on a daily basis. Before and after workshop care is available for a small fee.
Do I need to have my own computer?
Students do not need to purchase or own a computer to participate in Code Girls. YSA will provide full access to computers, printers, internet, software and other technology used in the program. Participants are welcome to use their own laptops if they desire but this is not a requirement.
