Moldovan Water Quality
Heavy metals are polluting the water in Moldova. This pollution originates from Soviet-era factories during Russian control, which left behind many heavy metals across several countries, including Moldova. Using Python, I created a map showing the impact of heavy metal pollution in Moldova.
These heavy metals, if consumed, can cause:
The information I used came from water samples collected by YSA students in Moldova, which were tested and combined into a data table. In conclusion, I recommend Moldova’s citizens should test their well and tap water before consuming.
These heavy metals, if consumed, can cause:
- Neurological damage: Metals like mercury or lead can cause irreversible damage to the nervous system and lead to paralysis.
- Kidney problems: Metals like cadmium and arsenic can cause kidney issues, loss of appetite, fatigue, and weakness.
- Cancer risk: Carcinogenic metals such as arsenic and cadmium can interfere with DNA synthesis and repair.
- Gastrointestinal issues: Heavy metals can significantly affect gastrointestinal health by causing irritation, inflammation, and other digestive problems.
