Carbon Dioxide in the Atmosphere
Cars release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere and it affects the planet in various ways. We used Python code to build a program that measures and tracks CO₂ levels in different parts of downtown Wilmington. With that data, we created a map to show which areas have higher pollution levels and how there is more traffic in certain places at different times.
For example, did you know the average car can produce 1/10th of a pound of CO₂ in just one minute? This doesn’t sound like a lot, right? The average drive time to get somewhere in Wilmington, North Carolina is 17 minutes. That's 1.7 pounds of CO2 being released in one average trip time for one car. There's an average of 2 cars per household and there are 59,730 households in Wilmington itself (206,546 households, Wilmington Metro Area). Now imagine all of those cars are on the road multiple times in a day. That's a lot of CO2!
