Pedagogical evaluation of YOUNG SCIENTIST ACADEMY EXPERIENCES
Students learn material differently, some are visual learners, some audible, and others kinesthetic or related to movement, so it is important that these outreach experiences include elements of each learning type to enhance the experience. In Fall 2015, we conducted a pedagogical evaluation of the TEAMS program via pre and post-assessment surveys of students (see figure below). These techniques will also be employed with YSA to ensure we provide the best quality learning experience for the children.
Examples of pedagogical evaluation of WAAS 6th grade science students based on pre and post assessment surveys. (Left) Students were split into two groups, those that were only allowed to use lab books and computers, respectively. In the example, those students using computers only had a higher level of confidence in understanding math and problem solving exercises as compared to those only writing in lab books, despite the faster and more efficient method at writing notes and performing calculations. (Right) Students improved their understanding of climate change and the scientific method through emphasizing key concepts throughout the semester as well as physically performing scientific research.
